Meet Hailey and Andrew, a lovely couple from Saskatchewan who recently welcomed their precious bundle of joy, Sullivan, into the world. As a photographer, I had the pleasure of working with them to create a newborn photoshoot that beautifully showcased their love, their style, and the adorable little guy who stole their hearts.

Today, we're diving into the wonderful world of newborn photography and exploring the art of dressing for the occasion. Whether you're a seasoned pro or embarking on your very first photoshoot with a larger “group”, finding the perfect outfits to complement your little one can make all the difference in creating timeless images that truly capture the essence of your growing family… and these tips will come in handy for all types of photography!

When it comes to dressing for a newborn photoshoot, one of the key considerations is ensuring that your outfits complement each other while still allowing your baby to take center stage. Hailey and Andrew understood this concept perfectly, opting for neutral colors that provided a cohesive backdrop for baby Sullivan's vibrant personality (and sentimental jumper!) to shine.

Hailey chose a soft, taupe sweater-dress, while Andrew complemented her look with a simple black henley shirt and jeans. Their choice of neutral tones not only created a timeless aesthetic but also allowed Sullivan's blue jumper to stand out as a focal point in the photoshoot.

Now, let's talk about baby Sullivan's outfit – a charming blue jumper with sentimental significance to Hailey and Andrew. This adorable piece not only added a pop of colour to the photoshoot but also held a special meaning for the proud parents. By incorporating meaningful elements into Sullivan's attire, Hailey and Andrew ensured that their little one's personality and story were woven into every frame. Sullivan was later changed into a light green set which allowed for diversity in the shoot and gave the parents more cuteness to look at in the final product! In a 60 minute session it is not uncommon for the whole family to do an outfit change.

When selecting outfits for your newborn photoshoot, consider the following tips to achieve cohesion while keeping your baby as the star of the show:

  1. Stick to a Color Palette: Opt for a cohesive colour palette that complements your baby's skin tone and the overall aesthetic of the photoshoot. Neutral tones like beige, cream, gray, and white are timeless choices that provide a versatile backdrop for your images — I say this while also wanting you to include the pieces that you love seeing your baby in! It won’t be forever that they can fit them.

  2. Keep it Simple: Avoid busy patterns or loud prints that can distract from your baby's adorable features. Instead, opt for classic, understated pieces that allow your little one to be the focal point of the photoshoot.

  3. Add Personal Touches: Incorporate meaningful accessories or clothing items that hold sentimental significance to your family. Whether it's a cherished heirloom, a handmade blanket, or a special outfit, these personal touches add depth and meaning to your photoshoot.

  4. Coordinate, Don't Match: Aim for coordinated outfits rather than exact matches. This allows each family member to express their individual style while still creating a cohesive look overall.

  5. Consider the Setting: Take into account the location and theme of your photoshoot when selecting outfits. For outdoor shoots, earthy tones and natural textures work well, while indoor shoots may call for softer fabrics and cozy layers.

By following these simple guidelines, you can create a beautifully coordinated look for your newborn photoshoot while ensuring that your little one remains the center of attention. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun, cherish the moment, and embrace the love and joy that comes with welcoming a new addition to your family.

What To Do With Your Images

  1. Create a Stunning Photo Album: Transform your favorite newborn photos into a beautifully curated photo album. Whether you opt for a traditional album or a modern digital design, a carefully crafted photo book will serve as a timeless keepsake that you can revisit again and again.

  2. Display a Gallery Wall: Turn your home into a gallery of love by showcasing your newborn photos on a dedicated wall. Mix and match frames of different sizes and styles to create a dynamic display that highlights your favourite shots.

  3. Send Personalized Birth Announcements: Whether you opt for traditional printed cards or digital designs, these announcements are a delightful way to introduce your little one to the world and celebrate this joyous occasion together.

  4. Start a Memory Jar: Begin a heartwarming tradition by starting a memory jar filled with handwritten notes, mementos, and photographs from your newborn's first year. Add a new item to the jar each month, documenting special moments, funny anecdotes, and heartfelt memories. As the years go by, you'll have a cherished collection of memories to look back on and share with your growing family.

  5. Create a Time Capsule: Capture the essence of your newborn's first year by creating a time capsule filled with meaningful keepsakes and photos. Include items such as a lock of hair, a favorite toy, a handwritten letter to your baby, and of course, plenty of photos from their newborn photoshoot. Bury the time capsule in your backyard or store it in a safe place, to be opened and revisited on a special occasion in the future.
