The Importance of Location in Photoshoots

YES - picking a location is my job! But I really, really want your input and here’s why:

Today, I want to talk to you about something crucial for your photoshoot: the location. As a photographer, I've learned that where we take your pictures can make a huge difference in how they turn out. From lighting and colours to how easy it is to get around — every little detail counts in making your photoshoot a success. But here's the thing – I want your input because you know what's special to you and what you enjoy doing together. If you have a connection to the location, you’ll be thankful later in life that you took time to honour it!

Let me tell you about a recent engagement photoshoot I did with Mikayla and Jacob. When I asked them what they liked to do together, Mikayla mentioned that they used to love going for walks, and Jacob would often take film photos of her – so sweet, right (SOORRRY LADIES, he’s taken!)? Mikayla also shared with me this little church out in the middle of nowhere in Katepwa, Saskatchewan, that she knew about. She thought it would be cool to take photos there because she wanted them to have a bit of a witchy vibe. And let me tell you, doing a session at that old church was just the ticket!

As your photographer, I understand the importance of selecting a backdrop that not only complements your style but also sets the stage for unforgettable images. I have personal goals with making your photoshoots as close to home as humanly possible, so don’t hold anything back if you have an idea of a setting that might be perfect for you. HOWEVER - not all lighting is created equal. Understand that as photographers we are taking your preferences into account while also considering how busy a place is, how much space there is, walkability, lighting, and capturing the essence of the location. Let's dive into some tips and considerations to help you pick the ideal location for your next photoshoot!

PSST —A note that you are never alone in choosing your location… it’s just a bit more fun and sentimental if we do it together!

Tips For Location Scouting:

Reflect Your Style and Personality:

  • Consider locations that reflect your personal style and personality. Whether you're drawn to urban landscapes, natural settings, or cozy indoor spaces, choose a location that feels authentic to who you are as individuals or as a couple/family.

    Consider the Mood and Theme:

  • Are you looking for a romantic, whimsical vibe? Or perhaps something more relaxed and casual? Your chosen location should align with the overall feel you want to achieve in your images.

    Think About Lighting:

  • Natural light is often the most flattering for photography, so consider scheduling your shoot during the golden hour – the hour before sunset or after sunrise – when the light is soft and warm. This is something I’ll help you navigate, actively!

    Incorporate Meaningful Elements:

  • Whether it's a place that holds sentimental value, like where you had your first date, or simply a spot that you enjoy spending time together, adding personal touches can make your photoshoot even more special.
    Embrace Creativity:

  • Don't be afraid to think outside the box and suggest unconventional locations for your photoshoot if it feels right!

    Trust Me

  • Lastly, trust my expertise and vision when it comes to my assistance in selecting a location. I know how to work with different environments and lighting conditions to create stunning images that capture who you are.

Remember, the location you choose sets the stage for your photoshoot and plays a significant role in the overall look and feel of your images. So take your time, explore your options, and ultimately, choose a location that speaks to you and makes you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
